Gary Karr is by far one of the world’s greatest classical double bass player and has been for 20 years, and he is in superb form on this disc. His technique is flawless. His tone is full and warm. His legato is long and strong. And his ability to make his instrument sing is a match for any virtuoso on any instrument.
The selections are all old favorites and Karr performs them beautifully. Beautiful Dreamer is creamy and deep. Old Black Joe is richly textured and sweetly sung. Amazing Grace is simply beautiful. The accompaniments by Harmon Lewis on piano and organ are sympathetic and tasteful. The sound by Winston Ma for Lasting Impression Music is breathtakingly exquisite and all-enveloping.
Gary Michael Karr (born November 20, 1941 in Los Angeles) is an American classical double bass virtuoso and teacher; he is considered one of the best bassists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
